People are starting to not know who Tom is. Although we all have an addiction to social media let’s bring some light on how this started. The Myspace social media platform was launched in 2003. The addictive platform was popular from 2005 to 2009. It allowed users to customize their personal profiles with blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos. Myspace even turned Millennials into part-time coders because you could customize your backgrounds or even put in code that did not allow people visiting your page to shut off your favorite song. At it’s prime, Myspace attracted 75.9 million unique visitors a month in it’s 2008 peak!
Why were we addicted to social media? It could be linked to the same reasons that we wanted to make our Myspace page cool…
- The basic human need of social interaction.
- The feeling of acceptance from our peers and a sense of belonging.
- The feeling of validation from likes, interactions, and comments… literally the feel-good dopamine release contributing to our feelings of pleasure.
